I was cleaning out my work email today and found this. I won tickets to see Tori Amos play live at a radio station and meet her earlier this year when she played at the Palace. The contest was to write a fairytale involving Elvis, a big screen TV and the Isle of Women. You had an hour. I turned mine in in 25 minutes flat.
So, for posterity, Once upon a time, there was a man with a penchant for sequined jumpsuits,
and super-shiny hair. His name was Elvis Presley.
Elvis was known by all the people in the land, and loved by most, but yet
still, he was not happy. He enjoyed a long life, playing his music for the
people of the land, and living in his castle, which was called "Graceland."
One day, feeling especially tired, and not so jubilant as he once was, Elvis
decided it was time for a change. He left Graceland, and decided to go on a
long journey. Not on a tour of the land, performing for his fans, but on a
quest to find happiness.
Elvis drove to the south and boarded a plane, headed for Mexico. He had
heard of the mystical beverage called "tequila" which the inhabitants of
that land enjoyed. He had also decided he might have a try at the music of
that land, which he had heard was called "mariachi."
But, when Elvis landed, and tried both mariachi and tequila. He found that
both distracted him for a while, but neither gave him the true happiness he
was seeking. So he decided to journey further.
And so he did, boarding a boat and setting off to sea in search of whatever
adventures might find him. And find him they did, for soon Elvis found
himself coming up upon an island. A large sign proclaimed "Isle of Women."
"Hmmmm...," mused Elvis. "Perhaps women will bring me happiness."
And so Elvis docked his boat, and set forth on foot on the Isle of Women.
Everywhere he turned the beautiful inhabitants of the island greeted him
joyously, jumping up and down and screaming for him, calling him their
"King."
Elvis felt a little better, yet still had not found the true happiness he
sought. He was persuaded by some of the women of the island to stay a
little while longer though, and they presented him to a hut, fit, as they
said, for their king.
When Elvis stepped inside the hut, he saw a large box that took up one wall
of the hut. The women told him it was a magic box, that they called
"BigScreenTeeVee," and handed him a small controller. They left him to
enjoy his home, and Elvis clicked the button marked "on."
And then he knew he had found what he sought. True happiness would be his.
Images and colors and sounds greeted him immediately on the 72" screen. And
if he ever tired of watching, a mere click of the button brought something
knew. The possibilities were endless, and the box never ceased.
And Elvis never left his hut, living happily ever after.
