Can anyone recommend...

...a good reference on pharmacology, understandable by the layperson?

This post by [livejournal.com profile] automat76 and several conversations we've had on similar topics lately have got us both wanting to read more about how drugs affect the body, specifically how some of them affect seratonin and hormone levels.

Can anyone recommend something? Keep in mind, that while she was a bio major for a short time, I didn't even take chemistry in high school. (Insert long story about christian fundamentalist and/or Amish math and science teachers in my school here. Really.)

I'm thinking the PDR may make a good start, but if anyone knows anything else, please speak up!

the pdr is pretty dense, if this'll be your first hit at medical jargon. for me, the pdr was bathroom reading growing up, so i don't have an issue with it.

i'll see if i can think of anything else that might be good.
