So, there are only a few people I went to high school with (out of a class of 55) that I care to ever see again. A very very few that I actually care about and wish to speak to. When I saw my friend J a few weeks ago, she was wondering about two of the latter category, guys who were our good friends. One was in band with me, the other was the *nice* football guy, and both were our partners in crime on the quiz team. Both of them went to college on Air Force ROTC scholarships, and went into the AF after graduation. We have some confirmation that one of them is an air traffic controller in Germany, but all we knew about C. was that he was a pilot. We were both a bit nervous about this.
J. got an email today from C. that's very reassuring. He's in Saudi Arabia, "fighting terrorism though [his] masterful use of the Excel Spreadsheet." Not entirely out of harm's way, but it could be worse.
C. was a very interesting guy, kind of the nutty professor type--brilliant, but absentminded--since the age of 8 or so. My favorite story about him is a great example of his personality. We had just started playing a Quick Recall (quiz team) match.
The first question, in the category Things that Start with "P" the question was "A fraternity boy might do this to his sorority girl sweetheart." C. buzzed in immediately, and said, "Ummmmm......I don't know...spank her?"
At this point the entire cafeteria erupted into laughter. At first, J. and I were most concerned that "spank" doesn't start with a "p," then we really thought about it.
(The answer was "Pin her.")
