I'm going to tear my hair out.
Ack! My ipod is killing me.
If my last idea didn't work, I'm posting in
ipod, but I thought some of you ipod/windows users/gurus on my flist might be able to help me out.
My system stats: 3rd generation 15 Gb ipod; Windows XP Pro with Service Pack 2 installed. Itunes 4.7.1, latest version of ipod updater installed. iPod connected to PC via USB, not firewire.
The situation: I keep my entire CD collection on my ipod, so I only need to sync it when I'm doing playlists or adding a new CD. I sync it up maybe every 2 months.
The problem: Every single freaking time I plug the ipod into the computer, it stays on for about 1 minute, then the library starts to sync. Once that happens, the machine goes to the blue screen of death, and says "Hardware Malfunction. Contact manufacturer for support." On powering off and restarting the machine, I get disk check on the machine. It once found an error in my iTunes library and fixed it, but most times finds nothing. The ipod itself seems unaffected by this.
The question, however, is "what hardware is malfunctioning?" The ipod or the PC?
I can think of nothing, other than the installation of Service Pack 2, that has changed about the PC between now and the last time I synced. OK, well, I got my printer working, but nothing's changed about the setup of the machine really. There is absolutely no documentation online (that I can find) about anything like this. The only SP2 info on apple's site refers to IE settings which have to be changed to use the music store. I don't use IE. I found one indication on ipodlounge.com that it could be a motherboard failure, but I find that unlikely since everything else (scanner, printer, digital camera, etc.) works just fine. The machine is slow, but that's normal.
All I want to do is get this Yeah Yeah Yeahs EP I bought on the ipod. And with Ani Difranco and Tori Amos releasing albums in the next couple weeks too, I need to get this fixed!
