So I discovered, after finally determining what is actually inside this machine, that I don't need near the hardware upgrades I was expecting in order to upgrade my home 'puter to Windows XP and (hopefully - let's all cross our fingers now) solve the registry problems that have plagued me all year. I spent some time on the Best Buy site this morning, and have determined that for less than $400, I can get the following:
Win XP Pro
5 USB port card (I only have 2 ports currently, but have at least 4 things that connect via USB)
Network card (solves the need for one USB port for the cable modem)
128 MB RAM (will double what's in there now)
I may skip the network card with all the extra USB ports. It's so cheap though, that I may go ahead. Or, if they have a CD burner on the cheap side, I might just go with that, and rip out the old drive and put a new one in. Then I could get rid of the clutter from the ancient zip drive, that I only ever use for backups anyway.
So, all told, with the Best Buy gift card from the gift exchange from work, the $ I got from selling back books today, and the $ I can hope to get from selling some stuff on ebay, and unloading the graphing calculator I no longer need, I think this might work out to just about be free. Can't beat that.
Time to go put on some makeup and low-cut top. I'm going to the computer store! :-)
