You're right, that it doesn't let up. Which kind of made me feel he was writing a book to be made into a movie (which it is) and made me a bit tired after a while.
But yeah, paying as much meticulous detail to humanizing the characters as he did to fleshing out the details of places and objects would have gone a long way to improve it.
