Yes the symbolisim is fabulous, but if you've read some of the references he cites in this book you can get the same info with out the serial novel aspects.
That was kind of my general feeling too--I have no problem with learning from a novel, but I don't want to know I'm doing it. This was far too preachy, "bang the reader over the head with information" for me.
I loved loved loved Middlesex. We did that two books ago. We are supposed to be doing a classic, probably Jane Austen, after this one. After that, I need to read something new. Except for DaVinci Code, I had already read the last three books before we picked them.
