I do the Christmas thing because my family does. I went through guilt for several years, because I don't have the proper religious belief that would warrant recognizing it, but, though it creeps me out, I've deemed it ok to do because I'm not alone in celebrating it merely as a gift-giving situation. Plus, it would hurt too many people in my family to completely reject it.

However, there are things I will not do and things I believe there should be ettiquette to govern. I want to see how off the wall I am though, so regardless of your belief/celebration situation, offer me your thoughts on these:

To clarify, Santas on the lawn are not my kink, but I figure that I get enough enjoyment from tacky decorations from other cultures (the kind of thing that probably leave the intelligentsia rolling their eyes) that it's hardly fair for me to be snobby about the ones of my own.

I was torn about the jewelry/clothes question. I hate that stuff *for myself*, so I clicked on "should never be worn"...but for *other* folk, I think it's okay to wear that stuff the week of the holiday...but you know, that's jut my control-freak self talking. People should be able to wear it in July if they want to, I guess. Same with the Santa in the yard thing...though they do make me shudder.

I went to the dentist on Tuesday. They were playing Christmas music. The receptionist puts it on right after Halloween. *gag*

I just put my personal preferences. The world would be a better place for MEEEEE if I didn't see animatronic Santas after Halloween and (frankly) if I never heard another Christmas carol again. And it's all about MEEEEE.

That said, I completely recognize that I have no say and *should* have no say in how people choose to adorn themselves or the tackiness of their lawn decorations. :-)

my peeve, even as a non-religious individual, is that the holiday is way too commericalized to begin with, and these massive iconic decorations are just perpetuating that cycle. on the halloween day this year, i saw christmas decorations fully stocked in large retail outlets. logically, merchandise availability must preceed purchases, but geez...

on the other hand, shitdamn if other folk want to decorate early (i simply shoose not to participate) -- that's their bag and i don't hold it personally against those individuals. it's all part of expression, i suppose... and, it really isn't much different from folks pre-ordering (some 6 weeks early) those thanksgiving turduckens (http://www.chefpaul.com/turducken.html) or christmas honeybaked hams (http://www.honeybaked.com) or valentines's day roses, eh?

I was torn between 'after halloween' and 'after thanksgiving' because I'm Canadian, and I always feel moderately weird about the after thanksgiving thing when that's not even one of my holidays (well, we do have it of course, but as you likely know it's in early October). I've always figured that it's okay to put up Christmas stuff in December, but malls and crap have to do it earlier to cash in on the 'spirit of the season'. *barf*

No animatronic Santas should ever be seen. :)
