OK, though random lj surfing, I came across a cache of pro-anorexia communities tonight. And, I'd seen some before so I knew they existed, however mind-boggling that might be.

But the particularly disturbing thing is that these girls are taking an actual disorder and trying to make themselves "catch" it. And they've obviously done their research, because they are actually expressing disappointment in not having side effects. One girl considered herself to have failed because she got her period.

I know I couldn't change any of their minds, but wow. Ten minutes of that is about all you can stand to read before you want to cry, or shake them, or I don't know what.

I used to read some of those, for the train-wreck effect. It's hard to believe that it's all true, isn't it?

I don't really understand how and why we keep pushing the kinds of things like marketing that leads to this kind of self-delusion.

Blah. Just reading this entry makes me feel ranty. Ranty, ranty rant!!

I've looked through them because somehow I feel like I should know and understand this phenomenon, but it's so damned disturbing I have to do it in very small doses.
