Oct. 5th, 2005 10:26 amSo, it's been a while I guess.
Last week was all taken up with finishing up the move. I got my apartment cleaned and the last stuff out of it by 7 pm Friday night--it pretty much took all week after work. I filled three of the alley trash cans with rotting cardboard boxes from the basement. Wow.
I am adjusting quickly to life with roommates. Actually, that's not the hard part at all. The things that are the worst adjustment are driving to work via Interstate rather than just surface streets; learning to go out and/or run errands after work in my work clothes, since it would be silly to run clear home, then back downtown to hang out; and re-learning how to get to places from my new place. I've lived within a four block radius since I moved to Columbus in 1998. So moving several miles from there has been a bigger adjustment than I'd predicted.
This week is shaping up to be "get your crap in order" week. I went to Target and got more underbed boxes for yarn last night and a standup closet thing for the basement for my coats and out of season clothes. I'm glad this is a three day weekend -- I'll need the time to get stuff taken care of, and Saturday is all booked between stitch n' bitch and the craft fair at Skully's.
Speaking of craft fairs, the trip to Chicago was awesome. I'd originally planned a day by day breakdown here, but I'm too booked right now for that. Suffice it to say, we had great fun. The Renegade Craft Fair got rained out about an hour after we got there, so we only got to see half of it, but I did get some handspun undyed yarn, a great glass necklace, and some knitting themed glitter notecards. We also went to a new yarn shop in the Loop, Loopy Yarns, and I got some great yarns. Since it was their grand-opening, I even got 20% off! Woo!
The highlight of the trip was definitely going to a little shop in Lincoln Park called Ethel's Chocolate Lounge. It was a little chocolate brown two story house with pink and brown decor inside. They had chocolates (yummy, but not as good as Pure Imagination in the North Market) and fondue, which was divine. We got ours with strawberries, bananas, pound cake, ginger snaps, pretzels, dried apricots and marshmallows. Yummy.
We also went to Chinatown and the top of the John Hancock building, and shopped at H&M, and went to Millenium Park which was way cool. All in all, I saw more neighborhoods during this weekend trip to Chicago than any other trip I've ever taken there. Awesome!
I love this photo for its touristyness, and the fact that all four of us are taking it.
Photos here.
And probably more later. My annual review is today, so I hope to have some good news. Cross your fingers for me please!

Date: 2005-10-06 05:37 pm (UTC)Sounds like an awesome trip...and personally people that get down on tourists irk me. There is something sweet and nice about the innocence of being a tourist, looking at a new place through the eyes of a child and wanting to remember all the moments. I did it in Pittsburgh even! It's kinda like the people that brag about not having a TV. Be a tourist!

Date: 2005-10-06 07:14 pm (UTC)I like being a tourist sometimes too, though I do love doing "regular people" stuff in a new city. That said, I think a great low budget vacation is to do tourist stuff in one's own city. I've always meant to do it with C-bus but just haven't gotten around to it yet. :-)
