Unless you're going for the jailbait, I don't think he's in high school...I mean, surely he's old & mature enough to be able to handle a one-on-one date by now?
I voted just go out with friends, but I think it'd be OK to do the text-message thing one last try if you want. It's quick, easy, and leaves the door open for him. And you've not put yourself out there so far to feel like crap if he doesn't reply back.
