Weekend recap:
Dec. 22nd, 2003 11:25 amFriday was scheduled to be the annual Mohawk dinner, but STS was still recovering from the plague, so instead, I picked up Chinese food and we met at his house. It was still much fun, but we missed
spandita. :-(
Saturday, I ended up sleeping in far too late, and then ran to Target to replace the shoe rack that perished in The Great Shoe Rack Accident of 2003
Thursday night, I was sorting laundry. When I finished, I needed to put on some shoes, to go load the baskets in the car. I have an over-the-door shoe rack on the back of my closet door, which was open, but I couldn't get to it immediately, because of all the laundry baskets. So I decided to stand on the lapdesk so I could reach over everything and grab my clogs.
I have stood upon the lapdesk before, but have been very careful to only stand on the frame, not on the hinged part that swings up as a book prop. I must have forgotten to do this this time, because the wood around the hinge splintered. This meant that there was nothing holding the hinge in, which allowed that piece to operate as a trap door, so I went plummeting through it. I had just reached for the clogs though, so all my body weight was transferred to the shoe rack, which was really on its last legs anyway.
At this point, the shoes all flew into the air, and I was both trying to protect my head from flying footwear, and to not sprain my ankle while trying to extricate myself from the lapdesk. Once everythind landed, all was well, but I was down a shoe rack (and a lapdesk, for that matter). I am a walking Rube-Goldberg machine sometimes.
So at Target, I got a new one that holds even more shoes (hurrah!). I will probably repair the lapdesk with duct tape. .
Not a good idea to have to run to Target on the Saturday before Christmas, on a non-holiday related errand. Went to solstice that evening, and it was fun. Wacky gifts as always, including a 40 of Schlitz Malt liquor (that went to Brad's mom) and a 6 foot inflatable penis (for Margi). Fun.
automat76 and I went back to B&J's house with them afterward for martinis, and watched the first half of X2 on DVD. Stayed up way too late after that reading.
Sunday, got up really late, because I had to be at Grandma & Grandpa's at 1:00. Didn't leave the house until 12:25, but I still got there at 1:05. About halfway there, I became very annoyed with someone in the lane next to me, who appeared to want to dragrace down I-70, but it turned out to be my sister trying to get my attention. So, we both got there at the same time. Mom and dad weren't there -- they have the plague now, to the point that they couldn't really get out of bed. A & I were going to go see them after we got done at G&G's, but we were talked out of it since mom is still contagious. So came back home and went to Betty's for a bit, then went home and finished Oryx & Crake. I absolutely loved this book, right through the end, then I turned the next page, and saw the acknowledgments and said, "That's the end?" I'm still processing what I thought of that. It's just that there were more pages in the book, so I was expecting another chapter.
This morning, I am tired, and I don't have anything pressing to do, so I'm having a hard time getting anything done. I have lunch with the girls from work today, and that should be fun, but my energy level is quite low right now, so I may not be much fun. We're going to Lindey's though, and I love Lindey's.
Tonight will be devoted to cleaning up the mess from the Great Shoe Rack Accident of 2003, and to washing the large quantity of stainless steel cookware I now own, thanks to Grandma and Grandpa.
