You shouldn't feel dumb - this is a very British list. And also the guy who made it up is probably early 40s in age (although he has "young" taste in a lot of ways) so it's somewhat generational too. I thought I would rather make up my own list, but then making lists of books, movies, music, etc. is always a bit problematic - no one can ever agree anyway.
