...a good reference on pharmacology, understandable by the layperson?

This post by [livejournal.com profile] automat76 and several conversations we've had on similar topics lately have got us both wanting to read more about how drugs affect the body, specifically how some of them affect seratonin and hormone levels.

Can anyone recommend something? Keep in mind, that while she was a bio major for a short time, I didn't even take chemistry in high school. (Insert long story about christian fundamentalist and/or Amish math and science teachers in my school here. Really.)

I'm thinking the PDR may make a good start, but if anyone knows anything else, please speak up!

I'm at the reference desk right now, so I'm going to treat this like a reference request because it's quiet in here. You might want to try the Merck Index, which is kinda technical on the level of the PDR, or Consumer Reports has the Complete Drug Reference, which is a little more layperson geared. CML has both of them, just at various branches.
