So we all survived this weekend. Not only does it feel like I was gone for way more than 2 nights, it seems like the whole thing was about a month ago right now.

Friday, I got up, finished packing, and then took [livejournal.com profile] automat76 and HSJ to the airport. Only we were running really early, so we went to get coffee first. This was good, as it gave me an opportunity to get a nwe card for my sister and her new hubby, because I inexplicably couldn't (and still can't) find the gift bag and card I'd gotten months ago. On the way to the airport, my car started making a noise. Not the noise that the windshield normally makes at highway speeds, but an additional noise. It turned out to just be the little flap on the undercarriage that had come loose, so I set off after dropping them off to find duct tape for it. I'd kind of planned to go to sephora at Polaris on the way anyway, but when I got on 270, I realized Easton was close, so I went there. I ended up going in to Nordstrom and getting them to do my face at the Stila counter and buying makeup, including the best foundation I've ever owned. I also got a pair of shoes, because there was a fantastic sale going on. So I now have dansko Mary Janes and won't wear my professional clogs out quite so fast hopefully. Then it was on to an office store to get duct tape, so that I could crawl under the car in my fully made up face and tape the stupid flap back up under the car.

Then it was driving. And driving and driving. I swear there was twice as much construction on I-71 as there was on July 4 weekend. I got to the hotel about 4:30, and had just enough time to check in and shower and get dressed before we had to be off to the church to rehearse. That didn't go nearly so smoothly as the rest of the weekend, as the woman who was running the rehearsal chose to respond to every legitimate question with a condescending, patronizing tone. I got snippy with her, but she started it. My dad was totally egging me on, because he and all the groomsmen got rubbed the wrong way by her too. We ran through the rehearsal super quickly, and I didn't feel like we had any handle at all on what was going on. I made sis and her hubby and the best man and I run through all the steps from the chairs on the altar to the place in front of the priest a few times, because I new once the bridal gown and my tall shoes were in the picture things would be different.

Then it was off to Buca di Beppo for rehearsal dinner, which was fun. As it turns out, the best man is in medical school at OSU and he lives a mere 6 blocks from me. How funny. He and his sister were both very cool, and we all had fun there. Things got emotional when sis and her hubby started passing out the gifts to the wedding party, which I didn't expect.

Then it was off to the hotel again, specifically the martini bar in the lobby. Sis's college friends were there by then, so there was some catching up time. I had two martinis and slept like a baby.

Saturday, we were up and at the hair salon by 10 for hair for mom, sis, me and the other two bridesmaids. I think my hair was the coolest of the three of us. I declined the curls and so the girl wove my hair up the back of my head, then did it very smooth on the front. The only thing that was more Charlotte York than my hair was my sister's hair, which was done up in an elaborate pile of curls, with a pearl tiara in front of it, and her veil underneath. I got a lesson in removing the veil so she wouldn't get whiplash from people hugging her at the reception.

Eventually, we all made it back to the hotel, where we found that the wrong flowers had been dropped off. That actually got resolved very quickly, then we had a mere hour to get ourselves dressed for the limo to come. We got sis into her dress for the photographer, then we all started crying. I'd seen her in the dress before, but not with the big underskirt and the makeup and hair and flowers and all that. She looked amazing.

The limo was a bit late, but we got everyone in and off to the church in time. The actual wedding was long and very traditional (full Catholic mass) but not nearly as boring as some of the other similar ones I've been too. Perhaps because we were playing a game of telephone on the altar, where the best man and groom would whisper "STAND!" and then my sis would whisper to me, and then we'd all stand up. I must have been sitting up really straight too, because several people at the reception later commented on my fantastic posture. Ha!

Odd surprise of the wedding, at least for me? BAGPIPES!!! At the end, when the priest announced them, two bagpipers came down the aisle of the church. Apparently I was the only one who did not know this was going to happen, and as I commented to the best man as we were recessing, bagpipes are not a thing you want to be surprised with. They were very very cool though.

Then it was off to a park for photos, where there were no fewer than six other wedding parties doing the same thing. We felt as if we were slumming it with our 9 people in a limo set up, because some of these were 20 and 30 person wedding parties on chartered busses! My favorite was the group that had the guys in khakis and hawaiian shirts, and the women in little slipdresses made of the same fabric as the shirts. We definitely had the coolest photographer though. He had been a photojournalist (someone said for the New York Times, but that was never confirmed) so he was very into shooting photos that didn't look staged, even if they were. At one point, he pulled a newspaper page out of his back pocket that had a picture of the foldout cover Vogue did a while ago with like 16 supermodels all together, then we replicated that, first with the girls, then with the whole wedding party. He kept encouraging us to ham it up, so there were a lot of Zoolander jokes, and there is at least one photo where another bridesmaid is licking my ear. He did several shots of the guys that were really Reservoir Dogs-ish and one with the guys and my sister that could have come straight out of The Godfather. My favorite was one that he did when we'd all been milling around in between shots. He just all the sudden said, "Everybody freeze!" and then moved one or two people and started shooting. So we're all standing around with hands on hips, and flowers in one hand, and jackets over shoulders, looking every which way -- I think it will turn out well.

We had time to kill before the reception, so everyone traipsed up to my hotel room with the liquor from the limo. This is the only time all weekend I actually took photos, including this one, which is my favorite of my sister.

The reception was after that, and it was pretty much a blur. There were some minor snafus, when people who were intending to go the reception down the hall dropped their gifts off at ours instead, but that eventually got straightened out. I ended up not giving a speech/toast, but that was ok, because the best man's was about 20 minutes long. It was good though. He did let out of the bag that my sis was a smoker, and that she gave it up when she and her hubby started dating, which was news to most of my family, including me. Ooops. It was funny though. After that, the reception was pretty much a blur of dancing. I kept drinking vodka tonics, but never even felt tipsy, which was odd. The groom's sister and her friend (both 18 years old and not terribly mature, and slightly drunk) wrestled each other to the ground for the bouquet. One of the groomsmen kept hitting on me, sometimes in front of his girlfriend, which was odd. He called me "Amelia" all weekend, and I'm not sure if he just thought it was funny, or if he thought that really was my real name. I kind of like it. My sister introduced the best man to one of her friends from high school, and they hit it off fabulously, which was really cool.

OK, that's the bulk of it. There are more little anecdotes to tell, but this is long enough for now.

Wow, I hope we can see the pictures, they sound awesome!

I'm glad it all went well - and I love your shoes; I've been considering getting some Danskos for a long time.

I hope that they get all the digital shots, and let me put them up on a website for them. That would be cool.

I have been wearing the shoes since Sunday now, and they rock. If you are on your feet at all during the day, and I assume you are, you will not regret buying them. I have already been looking for another pair -- they are that comfy!

It was gorgeous. Weighed about a half ton, but it was perfect on her. And she got it super-cheap on the internets! :-)
