Right after work [livejournal.com profile] automat76 and I ran up to the fair to see how I fared (ha!) in the knitting competion.

I'm more than happy!!!!

My Bad Penny sweater took nothing in the sweater category, but the things that placed were amazing.

My capelet took 3rd in the original design category:

And my afghan, my sister's wedding gift, took 1st place in knitted afghans, and Best in Show in the Afghan class!!! Woo-hoo!!!

There have been several of you on my friends list who've not fared so well at the county level. My advice: enter the state fair. Their judges seem to have a better idea of what they're doing, across craft categories. No fun fur scarves and badly executed things were winning here.

Thanks!

I forget if you technically live in OH or KY, but if it's OH, you should definitely enter the state level next year. There weren't all that many cross stitch pieces, but the ones that were there were stellar, and the one that won Best in Show was similar to the Miribilia (sp?) ones you've been doing -- a woman in lots of shaded colors with beads and stuff. You'd get a fair judging (no pun intended) there I think.

Ha! I had been thinking that because of Best in Show, but hadn't even made the afghan connection! :-)

Thanks!

Thanks!

The capelet was fun, because it was the first time I really wrote out my own pattern for something where size was important. I've done bags before, but hey, if a bag comes out too big or too small, it's not that big a deal. So I was almost more excited for my third than my other prize too! :-)

Thank you! You should definitely enter next year. I think our SNB should take over the fair! :-)

Thanks! I am thrilled!

And you *must* enter next year. The lace category wasn't that impressive, so I think they need you there to ramp it up, and I'm already thinking the outfit you just finished should go in the baby category! :-)

I'm working on a challah cover right now that, if I like the way it turns out, will submit next year methinks.

I think that would be a great entry -- they definitely seemed to display a bias toward colorwork and cables in some of the categories!

As well they should! Cables are just plain pretty. And fair isle.
I am so dragging my mom to the fair to look at it!

what was the prize, btw? My friend was curious because she said the Marion County fair 1st place was $3.

Yay! Maybe I'll have time to enter next year. I think I'm going to enter my socks in the Harvest Home Fair (It's a local fair), just for fun.

I was going to enter them in the Hamilton Co. Fair, but I think it's too late now.

Wow! I'm so happy for you. I'm sure that kind of recognition makes all the hard work even more worth it. Your sister should be pretty happy too, having an award winning piece.

I think it was over $20. It's on the pdf on the state fair website, because they are different by division. Some classes had additional prizes donated for the Best in Show -- I know the knitting class got some stuff from The Yarn Shop, but the afghans were a separate class. I think I at least made my entry fees back!

Thanks!

I really felt like some of the people in the building were expecting a little old lady to come in instead of twenty-something me with the nose piercing and all. What fun!

Hey congratulations. Those are both awesome, especially the blanket. Eat fried fudge on a stick for me! I miss the fair :(

Thanks! I actually just passed up the fried fudge last night, in favor of gross fair french fries, which are my personal fave.
