Warren Zevon's death this week had reminded me that when Carol Shield's last book came out, I read that her breast cancer had returned and was terminal. I did a web search just now, and discovered she actually died a few months ago.
For some reason, I didn't get around to reading anything by her until I was out of college. But I'm slowly making my way through her novels, and am reading a book of short stories right now. She's the sort of writer, who doesn't let you realize how good she is until you finish reading a book and think back to it a few days later. Everything seems mundane, but there's something skimming just under the surface that's so important.
Her last novel, Unless, is phenomenal. And I loved The Stone Diaries too. I may re-read that soon.
