Got the new Tori Amos DVD in the mail yesterday. I watched about half of it while knitting last night--it's the last show of the Scarlet's Walk tour, and it's really, really good. The movie starts out with a bunch of shots of Toriphiles saying how many shows they've seen. The highest number was 125! My measley 5 shows and 1 private radio station thingee pales in comparison. I can't imagine that you can remember details of shows when you've seen that many though.

The DVD is cool though because there were a lot of things I'd forgotten from the Promowest show last summer (which I think is in my top 5 concerts of all time.*) She's wearing the same dress in the DVD that she wore at the show here, and that broke halfway through the show and had to be fixed. Oh, and she yelled "He's just a pussy!" in the middle of "Sugar" which is really funny, but fits too.

The bonus features include a backstage interview with Tori's mom & dad. Her mom is like a slightly more grounded elderly version of her -- it was kind of strange. But she seems like the sweetest woman in the world. She kind of resembles David Letterman's mom too.

*Because Nick Hornby had a piece in the New York Times today, I shall now attempt my top 5:

1. Tori Amos, Dew Drop Inn Tour (1997?), Aranoff Center, Cincinnati
2. Ani Difranco (with Maceo Parker, 2000?), Brewmaster's Gate, Columbus
3. Some Girls (Juliana Hatfield, 2003), second show at Little Brothers, Columbus
4. Tori Amos, Scarlet's Walk Tour(2003), Promowest Pavilion, Columbus
[tie]
5. The B52s, 2003, Promowest Pavilion, Columbus
5. Nine Inch Nails/Marilyn Manson/Jim Rose Circus Sideshow (1995), Hara Arena, Dayton

That's probably not right, and I'll probably think of something else to include five minutes from now. But at this moment, it's as accurate as can be.

I've always regretted not having seen Warren Zevon in concert. :-(

Saw him three times. The first was the best. ONe was weird (no drummer) and the third was so-so.

Read that article. Thanks for the heads up. I love Hornby, he's in my head.

Have you read Songbook? I got it from the library and read it a few months ago and loved it. It's got a companion CD too. It's also one of the prettiest books I've seen in a while--really well designed.

Songbook is fun to read, even if you don't always agree with him. Did you see him here when he read at the Wexner Center a couple of years ago. For the short time I talked to him, he seemed to be a very cool guy. I'd love to have a few pints and watch a soccer game with him.

Unfortunately, I didn't. As is the case with most Wexner events, it wasn't promoted a lot, and I didn't know about it until the day of. I love his writing so much, and just think he sounds like a nice normal guy, which I like.

I picked up my DVD on Wednesday, but I haven't had a chance to watch it yet. :(

125 shows? Oi! I could barely afford the three from the Dew Drop Inn tour!

As for my top 5:
1) Tori Amos at University of Buffalo 1996 -- nothing like seeing the Cornflake Girl dance from front row seats...
2) Tori Amos at Sheas Performing Arts 2003 -- Joel moved me to the front row!
3) Ani DiFranco at Netwerk 1996(?), Buffalo. [livejournal.com profile] careyraz would know -- she dragged me along and I am ever so glad.
4) NIN/Marilyn Manson/Jim Rose Circus at Memorial Auditorium, Buffalo, NY 1995. Woah! Nakedness!
5) They Might Be Giants ... for the few songs they played before the rain blew out the speakers ... 2002, I think, Lafayette Sqaure, Buffalo, NY.

and and and ... :)

They Might be Giants put on the best shows. The first time I saw them was the roughest show I'd ever been to (and I had a habit at the time at going in to the pit at things like KMFDM). At that show, a guy jumped off the Newport's balcony and fell on me. When I met back up with the guys I went with, they thought I'd broken my collarbone because I was so bruised!
