When you leave work here after 6 pm, the electric eye raises the security gate on the garage so you can get out. Problem is, if there is more than one car, it often doesn't see the second or third car, and will start to come back down (this happened to me last week.)

When I left work last night, it was fairly late, and I drove out of the garage behind our executive director. She stopped dead in the driveway, not far enough to see to drive up, but not far enough back that I wasn't under the gate. As she finally pulled up to turn out of the garage, I realized the reason she stopped. She was reading the newspaper!!!

This continued through two traffic lights up the street. I couldn't turn right on red because she was straddling the lane and didn't pull up far enough. I almost honked at her when she didn't move when the light turned green. But how do you honk at your ultimate boss?

This is a smart smart woman. And I know her drive home is only about 20 minutes. Can't she wait that long to read the paper?

Got the new Tori Amos DVD in the mail yesterday. I watched about half of it while knitting last night--it's the last show of the Scarlet's Walk tour, and it's really, really good. The movie starts out with a bunch of shots of Toriphiles saying how many shows they've seen. The highest number was 125! My measley 5 shows and 1 private radio station thingee pales in comparison. I can't imagine that you can remember details of shows when you've seen that many though.

The DVD is cool though because there were a lot of things I'd forgotten from the Promowest show last summer (which I think is in my top 5 concerts of all time.*) She's wearing the same dress in the DVD that she wore at the show here, and that broke halfway through the show and had to be fixed. Oh, and she yelled "He's just a pussy!" in the middle of "Sugar" which is really funny, but fits too.

The bonus features include a backstage interview with Tori's mom & dad. Her mom is like a slightly more grounded elderly version of her -- it was kind of strange. But she seems like the sweetest woman in the world. She kind of resembles David Letterman's mom too.

*Because Nick Hornby had a piece in the New York Times today, I shall now attempt my top 5:

I've gone from bored out of my mind last week, to pleasantly occupied most of this week, to completely swamped since about 4 pm yesterday. Grrrrrr.....

I crave the hobgoblin of consistency as regards my schedule.

Yes, swamped is why this is my third post of the day. Swamped doesn't mean I'm concentrating well.

Oh well.

HOBGOBLIN!!!

Our project architect described an investment returns application as being based on a "Monte Christo algorithm."

Yes, it's dipped in egg and lightly fried!

I learned something very interesting earlier today. U.S. cell phone manufacturers and service providers often use different protocols on their networks, so to switch providers, you often have to get a new phone. However, in India, the protocol is more standardized, and most service is prepaid. So you can shop around for the best deal, and prepay a number, then swap out your SIM card based on time of day, or if you're calling internationally or not, or whatever.

Of course, one of the guys telling me this did mention the one drawback, which is that his brother has three SIM cards, so he sometimes has to call all three numbers before reaching him, depending on which card is in the phone at the time.

Well, almost.

Picture here. ) This is Honeymoon, from knitty.

As we note from the difference in my sweater and the one in the designer's photo, her sweater is long and slim fitting, while mine is short and floppy. Hopefully blocking will help it, but I've never blocked anything before, so I'm not sure.

If worse comes to worse, I'll rip out the straps and it will become a bit shorter. Not sure what I'll do about the loose waist. It's kind of got that 80s peplum look.
