I'm probably flagged as a terrorist now
Jun. 20th, 2005 06:47 pmI called Discover to activate the card they sent me a few weeks ago. Now, I don't ever use the card (it's a low APR balance transfer machine), but they transferred me to a real person, so I decided to ask to my weird question.
Um, can I please have a card that doesn't have the American flag on it?
The nice young lady in their customer service center laughed and assured me that I was far from the first person to ask for this. I apologized, but said that I kind of found it tacky.
The real word I meant was something more along the lines of "blasphemous" but in a patriotic rather than religious manner. Is there a word for this?
And though I'm not what most people would refer to as traditionally patriotic, it still squicks me a bit to see the flag used as decor, like on beer cozies or bikinis. Or this. And to use it on a credit card just seems particularly an egregious statement of "democracy = capitalism" or some such thing. Ick.

Date: 2005-06-21 01:01 am (UTC)I have a copy of the flag code, and was disappointed at how little I was allowed to officially tsk at. In brief, a flag is a rectangular piece of fabric that has the proper emblem on it. If you put the Stars and Stripes on an ugly prom dress or a toilet plunger, or paint the design on the side of your airplane or bake a cake or what have you, all bets are off. Those aren't flags. Pissed me off.
