For a girl who has always hated team sports, I seem to have found my life's passion in roller derby.

I was concerned about skating tonight because I haven't been on quads in about 5 years. I've rollerbladed off and on since high school, and I got my first pair of quads when I was about 5 (the adjustable kind that snapped on your shoes). One of my favorite childhood memories was my dad coming home from a garage sale with two pairs of quad figure skates for my sister and I. They had metal wheels, which we wore out on our concrete porch.

I was happy to be starting tonight though, because there were only about 20 women at practice, so I felt like there were fewer people to keep track of.

It so rocked. I can skate still--yay!! The hardest part was getting my crossover turns back, but I'm better off than I would have been had I never done them. And I'm ok at falling, and will get more practice at that. Squatting will be my hardest thing. I've never been good at that. Gotta stop with the high heel wearing I think.

I ordered my real skates tonight and paid the $20 for 3 day shipping. So I may get to skate in them by Thursday's practice. That would rock. Cause the rental skates...not so great for derby.

I'm so wired now. And so smelly and sweaty. I'm going to be in rockin' shape doing this three times a week, because tonight's practice was apparently easier than normal. I need to get my flexibility back in my lower back or else I'm going to be hurting, but getting back into yoga should help with that.

I can't believe I'm going to use yoga to support my career in roller derby.

Is it wrong that I can't wait to send in a class note to my college alumni magazine about this???

That sounds like so much FUN! It also sounds like something that I would totally get into, if I knew how to skate. ;) You have to post pictures of yourself once you get together your outfit!

Oh I will. I might even have photos of me from last night in all my gear (we are covered in pads) because one of the injured girls was taking pics.

And a lot of people who started out with this have never skated before -- so that wouldn't be a prerequisite. Check out the usrollergirls site -- there are new leagues cropping up all over the country!

Can't wait to come watch you!

Did you pick a name yet?

I'm leaning toward Alli Catraz right now. I've been asking people's opinions wherever I go, and that one seems to be the best received.

Yay!

Are you going to do yoga classes? How much are those anyway? What teachers would you recommend.
I loved the way my body looked when I did yoga, I just didn't particularly like doing it. Maybe if I had a good teacher it would be different.

If I do, I'll go to Yoga on High. That's where I went when I was going 5 days a week and had a rockin' bod a few years back. They are about $15 a class, but you can save if you buy a pass. My fave teachers were Marcia, Mary S. and Gail. One of the owners is in our Stitch n' Bitch group, but I'm not sure you guys have both been there on the same night before. She teaches ashtanga, and I always went to hatha, so I've not had a class by her.

I highly recommend them. Unfortunately, I need to build up my strength too for derby, so finances may make me end up joining a gym and doing yoga classes there. That pains me, because I love YoHi.

I'll give it some thought!
I wouldn't think you'd have to join a gym then if you were really fit when you did yoga. If you needed more strength, if anything you could do it at home...Body for Life has a good strength training regime in it, and you can so sequences where you only need free weights, which can be pretty cheap.

Yeah, but see, with me, joining a gym/going to class is just about as much about keeping me motivated as anything else. I don't have a lot of space in my new place, especially with two roommates, so I'm less likely to do things at home. Plus, if I've invested time and money, I'm more likely to stick with it.

Third, there is a gym near the yarn store. Bonus!

Oh so cool. I definitely want to see pics. Does anyone have Abra Cadabra?

Yeah, I think so. With about 25 or so leagues across the country, there are nearly a thousand names on the taken list right now. It's crazy!

I'm glad you found a passion. :)

Even before you mentioned your interest I'd given some thought to going to some of the local (Denver, CO) games. Keep us posted, especially if you travel to Denver. :)

We may be doing more local inter-city leagues in the future. Denver might be a stretch. Do go though. I've never seen it live, but can only imagine that it's much fun!
